Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at essexdogtrainingcentrebookings@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The length of time it takes to train a dog depends on a variety of factors, including the dog's age, breed, temperament, the type of training needed and how far the owner wants to progress with their dog. On average, it can take several weeks to provide a good basic level of training to intermediate standard.

Wear comfortable footwear such as trainers or flat boots - whenever possible training takes place outside on grass.  If the weather is not condusive to outdoor training, classes will take place in one of our two indoor training halls or our one covered outdoor area.  Also wear clothing that you can move about in, and bring a sweatshirt in case of cold weather.

Bring treats and titbits such as chicken, cheese or dog treats (high value treats - not your dog's usual food) and your dog's favourite toy - just make sure it is something your dog loves and is prepared to work for.  Break treats up into bite size pieces, no larger than your small fingernail.  Treats are available to buy at the Centre if you run out.

We recommend using a flat leather or nylon collar or half check collar that doesn't close too tightly on the dog's neck.  Under no circumstances do we allow choke/check chain, prong/spike or electric collars to be used.

Choose a lead that is comfortable in your hand and is well made and strong.  Flexi leads are not recommended for training - keep these for when walking your dogs.  CAUTION: flexi leads can be dangerous near traffic as they can snap.  For training, choose a lead up to 1.5 meter in length and made of either leather, nylon or rope.  Only use chain leads if your dog tends to bite nylon, leather or rope leads.

Anyone over the age of 8 years old can train dogs at the Centre, providing that they are able to control their dog and listen to and carry out instructions.  We welcome bringing the whole family, as there are spectator areas.  We actively encourage the whole family to get involved with the training, as consistency gets the best results.  You are also free to change handlers half way through the class.

Our policy regarding late arrivals is please try not to be late.  The dogs take a while to settle when a dog turns up late and this can disrupt the entire class.  If you are a few minutes late, you will still be able to join the class.  Please provide your details and payment at the end of the class.

No.  If you normally attend on a Tuesday, but can't make that day, come to any of our other classes that are appropriate for your dog.

No.  We do not offer courses, we operate on a pay as you go basis.  We believe that life can often get in the way of the best laid plans and would not want you to pay for a class that you are unable to attend.  All our Puppy classes will include elements of the basic exercises - Sit, Down, Stay, Walking to heel, Recall and Socialisation.

The Induction  is usually a 45 minute or more, group  chat with a senior instructor that introduces you to The Essex Dog Training Centre.  It includes information on how a  dog” works” and includes lots of tips which you can add to your “doggie”/canine knowledge that you already have. It includes understanding recalls, lead work, toilet training, jumping up, vet checks, mouthing and a whole lot more.

How does your dog see the world?  Its like this - if a dog is doing something, whatever it may be, and you do not give an alternative to that behaviour, then your dog thinks what it is doing is 100% correct and acceptable.

Remember, it is so easy to reward unacceptable behaviour without realising it. Just one of the many tips  you will pick up from the induction and your training classes.

Completion gives you lifelong membership to The Essex Dog Training Centre.

Once a member, always a member.  No need to attend another Induction session unless you would like to.  You are always welcome to return to training classes at any time.  Please contact essexdogtrainingcentrebookings@gmail.com for an Existing Members Registration Form which you will need to complete.

From time to time we may be able to offer 1 to 1 training sessions for Club Members.  Contact essexdogtrainingcentrebookings@gmail.com to book.

Unfortunately we aren't able to cater for aggressive dogs at the Centre.

Your dog must be at least 12 months old to start Agility training, but larger dogs may need to wait until 18 months old.  Please ask for an assessment at the Centre.

There is no cancellation policy.  Once you have attended an induction (which you need to book) you can turn up at any of our sessions that are appropriate for your dog's age and ability.
